"American culture has a hang-up about math. "American culture has a hang-up about math. Many believe success in mathematics centers on talent, but in fact (and there is research to show this) motivation and effort are really the keys to success. Learning math is akin to learning a language and essentially everybody learns at least one language fluently. In the case of math, it is the language of nature and science that we are learning and the insights it is capable of revealing can be amazing.
I am a computer science and math teacher in a Virginia public high school and recently finished the coursework for a master's degree in applied mathematics. My bachelor's degree is in math as well. I have spent the last three years tutoring undergraduates and even graduates in math, probability, and programming.
My other qualifications for tutoring involve a career (almost 14 years) as a software engineer, programming largely in C\C++. Actually, my range of computer languages has grown since working in IT, having been required to use a number of scripting and/or functional languages in my graduate studies.
It is important to me that my clients do well, therefore, both as a personal ethic and a means to a pedagogical end, I want students of all ages to feel comfortable when we work together. Feeling free to share confusions and uncertainties is a key part of the learning process. In addition, even more gratifying is if I can share (maybe even inspire) some interest in the subjects I teach as I've been fascinated by math and science virtually my entire life. I typically tutor anywhere between Bethesda, MD and Alexandria, VA.
Good luck to you in your learning adventure." less...
