"Hello!
I have a Bachelor's in Mathematics and am completing a Master's of Education in Secondary Education with an emphasis on STEM. Before moving to Oregon I spent eight years teaching at a private school in California teaching math and science classes including: Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Physical Science, and Physics. I taught math throughout, and have taught at least six years of all of the Algebra related subjects and no less than three years of Precalculus, Calculus, and Geometry. I've also spent a significant amount of time tutoring students, within the school environment, privately, and at a tutoring center. My tutoring work includes working with other tutors (usually a 4:1 ratio to students) as well as working one-on-one and with small groups. My experience at the tutoring center let me draw from others' experience as well as learn how to teach number sense and arithmetic concepts to Elementary age students. Overall I've taught students from 6th-12th grade and tutored with students from 6 to 30 years old.
Helping my students develop their mathematical muscles has been a joy. Math is the universal language of order and reason - meaningful to both the cosmos and our everyday lives. While there are hurdles to learning math, those difficulties serve rather as milestones to be celebrated rather than obstacles to bemoan.
As I tutor, I look to meet students where they are and build on the foundation they have. Students have an array of strengths and background knowledge, and it is important to tutor in a way that works for them. I am patient and willing to adapt to help my students learn. It is also important to build numerical fluency and mastery as the student progresses and I balance conceptual understanding with practice. As such, I want to help students develop a deep understanding of the concepts involved, the ability to problem solve using those concepts, and connections between concepts and what they've previously learned." less...
