"Hi there! I’m Nia.
I’m wondering: what’s your relationship with math? A chore to memorize? Interesting once, but now a slog?
Trust me, I get it. There’s a reason you’re feeling this way. Math education today is memorization. There’s no sense of creativity or discovery. You’re told a topic, given some repetitive problems, and you best wrangle your brain over that method in time for the test.
Mathematicians like myself know teaching doesn’t have to be this way. Rather than taught as doctrine, mathematics can be puzzle-solving and so imaginative. Every equation you’ve learned holds deep truths to discover. Lasting results and confidence grow from understanding how to reason with math, not from memorizing someone else’s procedures.
As your tutor, I’ll draw visualizations for each concept that you’ll remember. We will still be stuck in the confines of your class’s curriculum. Yes, I’ll still have to teach you that topic you loathe. But I’ll provide little insights and history to make the ideas glow. I’ll be your guide and advocate. My students find me entertaining, too. :)
I don’t expect to transform your relationship around math. It’s okay not to like something. But I’m here to help you to understand what math even is. How you feel about math afterwards is your own choice. And by the end, you’ll be empowered to ace that test.
