"I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Puget Sound, where I graduated magna cum laude with honors in the major and earned my university's award for Outstanding Senior in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. I went on to the University of Glasgow, where I completed a Master of Science in Mathematics with distinction. After that, I moved to Austria to pursue doctoral studies. I spent one year as a doctoral candidate in algebra at the University of Graz, and then switched to doing analytic number theory at the Graz University of Technology. Unfortunately during my time there I fell very ill and spent a year on sick leave from the university before I eventually needed to drop out and move back to the United States.
I always had my heart set on doing pure mathematics research in academia, so after dropping out of my PhD program I felt very lost and unsure about what to do with my life. However, I did work as a tutor for my university's mathematics department for a few years during my undergraduate studies. I enjoyed that job, and later on in my studies when I was strictly doing research I actually missed working as a tutor. I decided to get back into tutoring, and I now am employed as both a mathematics tutor and as an online SAT/ACT test prep tutor. Tutoring is even more rewarding than I remembered it to be, now that I get to work with the same students every week (as opposed to my university department tutoring, which was fully unstructured drop-in hours).
I have the most experience tutoring college students in the entire calculus sequence and linear algebra. I have also tutored high schoolers in high school level algebra, geometry, pre-calc/trig, and AP calculus courses. I have occasionally tutored classmates in higher-level math courses such as abstract algebra or combinatorics. I am comfortable with following the curriculum of a student's class, or building my own in order to teach a student concepts outside of their classes." less...
