I am a former student of The Master's University where I received a Bachelor's degree in liberal studies, and recently I attended California State University of Northridge where I received my credential in mild/moderate special education.
Background
I am a math tutor with 2 years of experience in teaching elementary mathematics as well as algebra and trigonometry for middle school and high school. I am looking to be able to tutor students in both general education and special education settings and am most interested in tutoring kids K-12th grade. I have been working with and teaching children from Pre-Kindergarten-12th grade in various capacities for 12 years which include preschool, after-school tutoring programs, summer camp, working as an instructional aide for elementary schools, and substitute teacher. For 6 years, I worked with general education students in various capacities including volunteer tutoring for kids K-6th grade at an after-school program at my local community center. Then, for 6 years I have been working with children with special needs which includes personal care, tutoring, and education mostly in school settings.
Education
I recently earned my teaching credential for mild/moderate special education from California State University of Northridge. Prior to this I attended The Master’s College for 3 years where I earned my BA in Liberal Studies, I attended community college where I majored in mathematics and completed courses in Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus. As one can see, not only do I have the teaching experience and am certified to teach but I also have a strong math background. My goal from all this education is to teaching special needs while having math tutoring as a side career.
Tutoring Methods
When tutoring, I make sure that my lesson plans are standards based, grade/age-appropriate, and follow and explicitly teaching model. Prior to giving a lesson, I first like to meet with the parents/students to give a pre-assessment that determines strengths and needs of a child that will help me develop effective lesson plans. I only do pre-assessments for long-term tutoring assignments, and I only do post-assessments at the end of a lesson for students who are either only interested in one-time tutoring
