"Throughout my academic career, I developed a keen interest in efficient, effective studying and tutoring others. As an undergraduate at Duke University, I majored in Philosophy while pursuing a pre-medicine curriculum that led to minors in Biology and Chemistry. By obtaining a liberal arts degree while also focusing on a scientific curriculum, I developed an academic approach that was more analytical and focused on understanding topics on a foundational level rather than simply memorizing material.
While at Duke, I also engaged in tutoring high school students and coaching basketball to middle school students at the Boys and Girls Club of Durham, NC. These activities led me to join the Teach for America Program in Fort Worth, TX. During my year in Teach for America I taught high school biology to 9th graders at North Side High School. It was during this time that I truly internalized the profound impact of teaching others and developed very strong skills in tutoring and teaching. My year teaching helped me understand the basic principle of teaching, breaking down components into their most foundational, simple components and then helping students summate that knowledge into a more complex understanding. I also developed the ability to individualize material to a student strengths. I thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching and often look at it as the transformative experience in my life. The lessons I learned and skills I developed as a teacher continue to have a profound impact on my daily approach to life and academics.
Currently, I am a medical student at West Virginia University. I have been able to excel in my classwork and standardized test by honing the skills I developed during my undergraduate and teaching career. I still continue to have a sincere passion for teaching while working with my colleagues in an academic and clinical setting.
As your tutor, I promise to treat you with the highest standard of competency, professionalism and enthusiasm.
