"Hi, I'm James! I graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, with a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics. I understand how difficult the core science coursework for a health science or pre-med student can be, because I was one of them. As an undergraduate in these courses, I had to learn how to study effectively and efficiently, manage my time, and consistently focus on the areas that I needed the most work in. And now as a tutor, I bring this approach to my students and give them the principles and strategies behind effective studying, time management, and knowledge feedback so that they can succeed as well.
I use lesson plans to structure each session, where I introduce the topic from first principles, focusing on the most important things the student needs to understand and build their learning upon. I make time during each session for the student to relay their understanding of the subject back to me, as this creates opportunity for live feedback and builds confidence that they're actually learning in real time. After the session, I always leave the student with a study plan and practice strategies, which include spaced repetition and the Feynman technique, but can always be adjusted based on the student's needs.
I have a year of undergraduate tutoring experience in Anatomy and Physiology, as well as a semester of Genetics tutoring. I work both one-on-one and with groups of students, at most 5-6 at a time.
I prioritize helping students build a deep base of working knowledge in their classes and helping them think from first principles, because I have seen this approach have far more success than simple rote memorization--and, it's a lot more fun for students! I of course also welcome any suggestions or resources that parents or students provide, because I believe tutoring is a two-way relationship.
