"Hi! I’m Sam, and I’m a high school English teacher at an independent school in Queens, NYC. I'm a proud graduate of the University of Michigan (Highest Honors) and Yale University. After pursuing a career in health care, I discovered my vocation was working as an educator. Much like medicine, education at its best is therapeutic, preventive even.
I’m equally comfortable tutoring the humanities (e.g. English, history, college essay consultations), as well as STEM (e.g. biology, chemistry, math up until Algebra II). I’m happy to partner with everyone from 7 year olds to post-graduate students to non-traditional learners.
My educational philosophy revolves around an inquiry-based approach, as well as promoting a safe, joyful classroom. I want my students to confidently grapple with analytically challenging problem sets or an emotionally charged short story.
Beyond the classroom, I’ve published widely in academic journals and public venues, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the History of Medicine & Allied Sciences, The Washington Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. In my spare time, I enjoy theater, used-book hunting, and playing fetch with my Maine Coon cat, Misha. Please let me know if you have any questions and feel free to schedule a lesson. See you hopefully soon :).
