"Hello -- my name is Alex! I graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Computer Science. I have a passion for all things STEM, specifically math! While I work as a Software Developer now, I am still so very passionate about helping my peers understand difficult topics. This passion for tutoring dates all the way back to my childhood. Growing up, my brother needed help with his math classes but dealt with extensive anxiety about contacting his teachers for help. Being four years older than him, I began helping him everyday after school with studying for his tests and with his homework problems. It made me so happy to see him get more comfortable and gain confidence with each time we worked together, In high school, I continued this by helping my friends with their classes. During lunch I would show them how I solved our homework problems, breaking down difficult concepts into more digestible pieces. In high school, I worked as a peer tutor for two years, specializing in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Chemistry. Additionally in college, I worked as a Resident Advisor for two years and would hold weekly tea and tutoring sessions for my residents who needed help with their courses.
I learned that most people are visual learners, so I also encourage whoever I'm working with to "draw a picture" or "write every step down". I find that most people will try to keep a lot of information in their head which leads them to making mistakes while solving math problems, for example. But, when they write down everything, they are able to rely on previous records of their work and check their work as they go!
I am very patient and believe that learning can be fun for everyone! I work with every student and tailor lessons to their individual needs. I create fun and cool ways to teach material and always make sure to watch the student practice the concept multiple times on their own. I encourage questions and ask my students to stop me at any point if there is any confusion. Let's learn together!" less...
