"My students call me Mr. Yamo! I am a Charlotte native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Anthropology and History, with part of that time spent studying in Japan at Obirin University in Tokyo. With a Japanese father who adopted myself and my brother when I was a child, I have unknowingly been an ESL teacher for my father for many years. When studying in Japan, I worked part-time as an English instructor, and that's when I got the "teaching bug". After years of teaching, I earned my Master's degree in Educational Administration. Currently, I am an English and Language Arts teacher at Marvin Ridge Middle School for 8th grade Honors English I. I am certified in middle and secondary language arts and social studies, with experience in AIG and Advanced Placement courses.
Although I have not performed much tutoring on an individual level outside of the school buildings, I have a wealth of experience in teaching subject material, helping students become more organized, and prepared students for testing and growth. I have taught English and Language Arts and Social Studies from the 6th to 12th grades. Although I am not certified in Science and Math, I have taught both subjects briefly and can help with those subjects as well. I have also coached many sports.
I appreciate opportunities to work with students one-on-one, especially struggling readers and students who have a hard time staying organized. In all my years of teaching, I believe those two areas are the most important for young people to grasp to become great students, then great successes. I can assist students with feeling comfortable about reading, taking notes and recalling important information within texts, and focusing on vocabulary strategies." less...
