"I am a graduate student in the Mathematics program at Eastern Illinois University. My undergraduate degree is in Math Education, and I have had many credit hours as well as on-the-job hours as both an educator and a tutor. I enjoy mathematics, but I recognize that many people tend to struggle with it. My goal as a tutor, and more generally as an educator, is to help people not only with the content, but with gaining an appreciation for math and an understanding of how to succeed in the subject in the future.
I have tutored in many areas of mathematics including: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus I, Calculus II, Discrete Mathematics, and Linear Algebra. Additionally, I have taught content in the following grade-related areas: 7th and 8th grade math (Pre-Algebra), high school algebra, and college algebra.
I have had many opportunities to teach and tutor in various fields of mathematics. In all my math teaching endeavors, I place a strong emphasis on the "why" behind problems, and don't just focus on the "how". That is, in addition to completing a problem, I want to make sure that you understand why the answer is what it is, and why the math we used in solving the problem works like it does. Focusing on these deeper concepts is essential to your continued success in the subject, and will allow you to make connections between problems that would not be present if we just focused on how to do the problem. It is for this reason, and my prior experience tutoring in math, that I believe I am an exceptional math tutor.
Music theory is very mathematical and logical in its structure, and this has been something I have always enjoyed about the subject. My strong background in math allows me to provide a unique perspective on the subject that someone just studying music might not have. Taking advantage of the structure present in many areas of music theory makes the learning of it much more natural and rewarding. Additionally, I am an avid musician and have a fairly well-trained ear, which will" less...
