"Hello all,
Are you working on an audition and want some practical advice? I’m here to help you interpret the script and make the character yours.
A character is the real you given different circumstances. Whatever the character, you are the one delivering it to the audience, so I believe the character should be a mix of you and the role created by the writer. What can only you bring to the role, that will delight the audience?
How can you make a role make sense given who you are vs who the character is? That is the challenging and fun part of acting, making a role make sense in ways the author didn’t even think of. People come in every style, so the only limiting factor is your creativity. Although, you have to be willing to throw out a concept for a character or line when needed.
Find your own style of comedy, that you feel is funny, rather than acting as if something is funny. An ability to be silly is a must, sometimes it starts with just a unflattering impersonation of someone!
For drama, is it worth crying about and does it speak to you on that level? Who or what pulls at your heart strings? That’s important to know in order to empathize with the character. Crying on cue is a great skill but not what I aim for.
Acting should be fun, if it’s not, you may be trying too hard. Sometimes silencing your brain will work better than overthinking it. The simpler approach is often the stronger acting choice. You may not feel connected to an audition/role, but you’ll often find it a rewarding experience if you see it through.
I believe acting should teach you about who you are, give you self-confidence and bring joy into the world.
There is beauty and truth in everything and finding it in a scene is what counts.
