"When I began tutoring, I was only six years old. My mother was a teacher and she tutored me after school among her own students. I admired her patience, her ease with explanation and offered my tutoring services to my cousins every time I got to visit them. At that age, I felt the best part about getting an education was sharing the knowledge.
In college, I became a workshop leader for a computer programming course and a tutor for French. I felt capable in teaching both which was why I applied for the position. While doing it, I found myself learning and mastering the subject with the student and I became more passionate about it. After college, I continued to volunteer as a tutor and sometimes teacher. Most recently, I tutored adults and young children in the English language as a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica. English is my second language, therefore, I had to attend ESL classes from middle school until high school. I learned English through reading. Additionally, For three months, I was trained on ESL for Spanish speakers. I attended school taught in French in Haiti for thirteen years. Also took an advance course in college to speak at a professional level. I learned Spanish in college and lived in Costa Rica for two years and is fluent in both writing speaking and understanding. I was tested advanced high during my Peace Corps service.
What attracts me about tutoring is being able to simplify the problem and stimulate student's thinking. I am a visual learner so when I am tutoring, I like to employ theater, drawing anything that will help the student internalize the subject. I am very patient, I help my student build confidence and support them in setting their own learning objectives.
Currently accepting students who want to improve their Spanish, English and Haitian Creole." less...
