"About Emily:
I graduated from Vanderbilt University’s Ph.D. chemical & physical biology program and I have worked as both a researcher and teacher. My interest in science is to understand the chemistry, biology, and genetics of rare, undiagnosed, and complex diseases.
A little about my education background:
I earned dual BS degrees in chemistry/biology from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (go chargers!). After I finished my master’s degree in Chemistry, I joined the Jacob Lab to work on my Ph.D. This gave me an opportunity to return to the HudsonAlpha Institute in Huntsville, AL where I previously worked in biotech companies as a research associate. My family and I just relocated to Kansas (around the Sterling/Hutchinson/Lyons etc area) and I am excited to help local students with their scientific knowledge needs!
My passion for education and students:
While I was an undergraduate and in graduate school, I was given the opportunity to teach both chemistry and biology labs, recitation classes, and provide one-on-one mentoring to help students with their future scientific careers. The students I was able to help came to me with a variety of challenges – including needing clarification and explanation of material content, problem-solving, exam preparation, study-time management, and overall confidence building.
I have had the opportunity to teach students (both high school and college) for many years in topics ranging from general chemistry and biology, to more specific topics such as genetics. I apply my experience to adapt tutoring time to target the student’s needs of the scientific topic, problem-solving, and quiz/exam preparation.
Science courses can present many different challenges for students - this is normal!
Allow me to help you navigate and understand the class material. As well as, build-up your confidence that you can do well in chemistry and biology!
