"I have 20 years of teaching experience, mainly in the areas of special education and math. 5 years ago, when presented with a very, very bright student with extreme reading difficulties, I realized my two teaching degrees had not prepared me for the complexities of teaching students with reading disabilities. I started my own personal journey of research and learning and found the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading and spelling.
I attended 70 classroom hours of training under a Teaching Fellow within the Association of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). I am currently tutoring students under the supervision of my Fellow to fulfill 100 supervised tutoring hours so that I can test and apply to become a certified member of the Academy.
I firmly believe in this method of teaching and cannot believe I spent so many years teaching students without this knowledge. It truly does make a difference in the way some students learn.
Due to the multi-sensory nature of this method, I do prefer to meet in person in a public place (such as a library). Since the start of the pandemic, I have been collaborating with teachers who are making this type of learning work on a virtual platform and can make that accommodation if needed.
Please contact me with questions regarding OG or scheduling a session." less...
