"I am a homeschool mom of four children. For over 15 years I have spent some of my career in social services, helping individuals and families impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. I am also an Army Veteran and served over 10 years in the Army National Guard. Back in 2017, I decided to make a career change and worked towards my elementary education degree. I currently have my masters in elementary education, as well as my elementary education license in Massachusetts. I have spent time in an elementary school setting, and most recently worked in a middle school with English Language Learners. I am an Associates Level trained Orton-Gillingham (OG) tutor, with the anticipation of being certified this summer. I personally love the OG method and believe it is incredibly effective with all readers. I currently tutor using the OG method, and use the method on my own children, one of whom is dyslexic.
I am happy to tutor one to one, either online or in person. I can also tutor in small groups, however, believe that those should be conducted in person. My experience has been historically with elementary-aged children, however, the instruction and training I have been receiving with OG has provided me an opportunity to work with older students and adults who struggle in reading and spelling. The OG method was designed for dyslexics and those with language-based learning differences, however, it can be used with all students learning to read and write.
My session runs between 45-60 minutes. The OG lesson is a structured literacy lesson that uses multiple senses to teach reading and spelling. OG develops phonological awareness skills, providing explicit phonics instruction that is structured and sequential, and breaks down the process into manageable chunks. Prior to starting instruction, students are assessed to identify their areas of difficulty. From there, each lesson is developed specifically for the student and their needs. Each lesson always ends with 15 minutes of oral reading." less...
