"My goal is for my tutee to achieve mastery and independence in what they want to learn. This can't be achieved by only teaching algorithms or memorized techniques, which is what many other tutors only offer. I tell all my students, it's easier to rely on a conceptual understanding of mathematics than isolated tricks or tactics for solving just a few particular problems. The latter knowledge base will often fade just a few days after taking a test. However, a heuristic understanding of mathematics can last a lifetime, and this is what I have to offer you. I focus on teaching mathematical concepts, which allows my students to better acquire new skills. That is ultimately what I strive to teach my students and tutees, the ability to become a stronger, more efficient learner.
Here's some info about my journey. I've always had an interest in learning and teaching, so I started tutoring at the Child Center of NY while attending high school. Eventually, I began to tutor privately. I knew that I wanted to shape my career around math. My experiences taught me that I was a people person at heart. I realized that I was happiest when teaching or tutoring math. While completing my Bachelor's in Pure Math, I got accepted into Math for America, a competitive fellowship that paid for my Graduate Degree in Secondary Mathematics Education.
Now as a certified NYS mathematics teacher for 8 years in the New York City public school system, I can say that I love my job. Currently, I'm teaching AP Statistics and Algebra 2, but I have taught Calculus, Algebra 1, and Geometry during my career. I am continuing to expand professionally. This year, I am pursuing an additional license in Special Education. If you were to walk into my classroom one day, you would see a learning culture that thrives on working together. My fellow teachers and supervisors tell me that my 2 greatest strengths as a teacher are my content knowledge and my rapport with students. I hope to explore mathematics with you and better prepare you for the road ahead." less...
