"I’m Joe, a visual artist and educator working to keep traditional art mediums alive! With a background in Theatre Design, my approach to painting has been described as innovative. I have held art residencies in healthcare centers and schools throughout New York, and have an integrated teaching approach for the artist of almost every age.
I specialize in painting with the classical mediums of oil, acrylic, and watercolor, and have developed systems for streamlining the workspace for beginners. Every painting that I engage in begins with an illustration, or a paint “study”, an approach that is fundamental to my personal practice and teaching.
As a student, we will develop your drawing skills in a way that informs and benefits your painting. Another approach to our time together could be focused solely on developing drawing skills and exploring dry media such as charcoal and pastel.
As in any field of learning, you can only begin where you’re at. My approach is to always encourage the artist every step along the way.
My degree in Art trained me in a multi-perspectival way, drawing on the importance of art history, independent studio practice, and managing time. I have experience teaching children, young adults, and elderly people, with a similar approach to materials. I value diversity and practice active listening when working with students.
