"My desire and passion to help people is the foundation of my career. I have been fortunate to work with populations of varying age, race, and gender, alongside a team of individuals from ever conceivable profession and discipline. My professional trajectory took an unexpected turn when I took a position as a Special Education Teacher. It was a challenge that I quickly learned would benefit my own growth, as well as continue the important relationships I had built with the students on campus. I was able to transition from the clinical to the education department seamlessly.
As a special education teacher I am able to integrate and incorporate critical skills learned and practiced during my training as a mental health counselor in the classroom in a more controlled setting. The challenges that myself and other education professionals face is fostering growth and learning that parallels skill acquisition and mastery, and personal growth and character building and development in our students. It is a challenge that I welcome and enjoy meeting each day I enter the classroom. The majority of my experience has been with "difficult to treat populations. An added benefit of tutoring will expose me to a wider range of students in terms of ability, emotional maturity, and psychosocial development. A personal mantra is "a true student never graduates" (Author unknown).
I have a slight neuroticism about using language in the correct manner. To the irritation of my friends, I do consistently correct them if they use the word incorrectly or pronounce something incorrectly. I do not do it in any sort of condescending manner, I do it because we should not let the artistry of the spoken language go to waste. I consistently tell my students that the way one converses with friends is not the way one should speak to an adult, or when composing a paper. I think language is beautiful. I believe all aspects of language are beautiful. I enjoy continuously learning.
