"My name is Rebecca, and I am a rising junior studying music and physics at Skidmore College, where I have earned their prestigious Porter/Wachenheim Scholarship in Math and Science. I love working with students and I have worked in a variety of professional settings with children, including being a high school tutor in math and history, a violin teacher, and a camp counselor. I attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts in NYC as an instrumental major, which allowed me to foster interests in both music and science. I have been studying for violin for nearly 17 years, and I have been involved in tutoring since my sophomore year of high school. I have worked with students as young as 8 years old and as old as 17 years old. All of my tutoring experiences have been volunteer experiences as I aim to make tutoring accessible to all.
In math, I tutored one-on-one through my high school for 2 years. I have tutored in person and online, and I believe in catering to each student’s abilities. Some students need more help with basic concepts, while other students just need the concept re-explained to them. As someone who has previously struggled in math, I believe that patience and enthusiasm are key to a student’s success. This is how I have been successful on the SAT, where I scored a 770 on the math section, and in my upper-level math and physics courses in college.
As for teaching violin and music theory, I taught violin lessons in high school for a year, and I have been successful in my college-level music theory classes. I focus on building technique in students to produce the best sound quality and make students feel like their playing is easier. I have only taught online, but I would love to teach in person as I believe it is easier to connect with the student that way and work on issues. The students I have taught have been on the intermediate level, but I am open to working with less experienced students. I enjoy when students feel more confident in their playing." less...
