"Hi! I'm Evan, and I recently graduated from Lawrence University where I studied saxophone performance and English. When I started school I decided to pursue degrees in both fields because I couldn't imagine not studying both of them, and I feel the same way about teaching! I have been a writing tutor for seven years, helping students at all different levels with different types of writing. I've specialized in helping students nail their analytical essays in English classes, but have also worked with students on subjects like creative writing and poetry, environmental science, and more. I love brainstorming with students and working to figure out how to get the ball rolling on an assignment when they don't have an idea for what to write yet, but also have lots of strategies I enjoy sharing for how to draft the idea and shape it into writing. I think my favorite part, though, is the editing phase, where the puzzle of how to order the ideas, finding just the right word for a particular sentence, and sharpening the prose are all aspects of writing I love to obsess over. The big picture is the most important thing, but I'm always excited to dive into small details!
I have been playing saxophone for twelve years, and teaching it for three. I play in all sorts of styles, working on classical repertoire, band and orchestral music, jazz, pop, funk, contemporary, and more. During college, I have been awarded top prizes in competitions, have sat first chair in several of my school's top ensembles, and even premiered and recorded several brand new compositions. My pedagogy is centered around helping students develop exemplary technique and control of the instrument so that they can find their own unique musical voice in whatever style they play in, whether they are a complete beginner or have been playing the saxophone for their entire life. There's always more room to grow in terms of our expression, technical ability, or just playing band parts; I'd love to work with you to help you reach whatever goals you may have!" less...
