"I am a recent high school graduate that took an OnRamps college algebra course with the University of Texas, an online British Literature course with Houston Community College, and an in-school Government class also partnered with HCC. I have taken Advanced Placement classes since I started middle school and that has translated into my high school experience. My school offered course pathways to get a head start in certain industries and I chose to do the VAMOS Program which is Video Audio Media Occupational Studies where I learned video editing in Adobe Premier Pro, dabbled in Photoshop, and learned sound and podcast production.
I would feel comfortable teaching elementary and middle school math, some science, reading and english, and teaching some Spanish.
When I volunteered at a park last summer to help watch kids while parents worked, I enjoyed when the students would pick up books and ask to read to me. They would read as I listened and gently corrected them into pronouncing words the right way. It was very fulfilling for me to help the kids and they also enjoyed it. I would like to experience that again and one-on-one seems perfect; I can give my student all of the attention they need and cater exactly to them rather than five children begging for my attention at once at reading time.
Even before my time at the park, I have always known that later in my life I want to be a teacher, so slowly getting in that practice is a must for me.
I myself somewhat struggle in the school environment, so being able to help a student who may feel nervous during school days and help them catch up would mean a lot to me, and likely also to them if they feel the same. I can sympathize with the student easily, and if they are neurodivergent, I would be able to relate to that since that is part of who I am as well." less...
