In 2007, I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education. While going to college for this degree, I tutored fellow students in various math courses. There was a class called "Math for Elementary Teachers", and we had to write out explanations of how we solved problems. This helped students to understand each step they took, to dissect the math equation/problem. Many students struggled with this, but I excelled. I became a tutor to help my fellow students understand the "why" and "how" behind each problem, and put that into words and paragraph form.
I taught 1 yr of 6th grade Science, filling in for a maternity leave. I used visual tools, like flip charts, to help my students study. My favorite project was the Moon Journal. I had my students observe the moon each day, and draw the phase they saw along with what time they observed it. We did this for a whole month so that they could see the sequence from one phase into another, and could grasp why the moon is sometimes out during the day and other times during the night. I also took them to the Challenger Center, which is a learning center focused on moon exploration. We had to complete a training program in the classroom before going on the fieldtrip. Activities in the classroom focused on communication and problem solving skills, using standards based lessons. After this teaching experience, I was a substitute teacher for elementary and middle schools. I also worked 1 year at Sylvan Learning Center, which is a tutoring business. As a tutor, I like to get to know my students to understand their individual style of learning, and gear my lessons around that style." less...
