"I'm a software engineer with a Bachelor's in Math and Computer Science from Reed College. While I was in school, I realized I had a passion for helping those around me understand and appreciate Math. I decided to stop tutoring while I settled into professional life, but I'm excited to rekindle that passion! I have experience teaching mostly the high school curriculum, but have worked with younger students as well as students working through Calculus and Linear Algebra. I've helped people improve their score on the SAT and ACT, as well as the SAT Math subject tests. I haven't tutored much for CS, but I'm open to it!
I consider myself to be more student-oriented than average. I don't like training people to parrot back correct answers or memorize a list of steps. I meet students where they are, engaging in dialogue with them about their best approach to a problem and where they get stuck or intimidated. When there's a conceptual issue, I pride myself with being able to identify it and calmly help the student through correcting their understanding.
I am also available to tutor for standardized tests, especially the ACT. I received 800s on Math Level 1 and Math Level 2 Subject Tests. As for the ACT, I received a 34 composite score, 36 in reading, 35 in Math, 35 in English multiple choice, 31 on the Science section, and a 10 on the essay (which made for a 33 combined English score). For this score, I was nominated for the Presidential Scholars Program." less...
