As a tutor in math, I understand that for some students, math is equivalent to learning a foreign language. For others it may be a specific topic that rattles them. In each case I'm patient and I'll adapt to each of their learning styles to achieve success. For the visual learner looking at a graph, chart, or table works best. Depending on the activity the kinetic learner can work with a physical representation to understand parts of an equation and connect it with visuals.
The best thing about tutoring people isn't just the fact that they understand the material at the end. It is the growth in between, seeing how each unique person processes information and their view of the specific subject changes from "I just don't get it " to "If I sit down and navigate my way through the process I can get through this". The change in mindset to optimism aides in any student being able to grasp the material.
