"As a tutor, I love seeing my students progress from being lost or frustrated in their course to saying "I can do this!" I believe chemistry should be fun. But personal experience has also shown me the feeling of being stuck in a downward spiral. The struggle to master concepts causes frustration and anxiety, destroying their self-confidence and interest, which in turn makes learning even more difficult. To break out of this spiral, I work to help students relax and find humorous or personally relatable ways to understand and remember concepts. I then work with them to simplify the "wild world of chemistry" into something more systematic that works better for the individual student's natural thought processes.
I graduated from Texas Christian University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry (specifically Materials Chemistry) and spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the FDA. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Physics from Grove City College in Pennsylvania. As an undergraduate student, I worked as a lab teaching assistant in introductory labs for engineers, as well as analytical chemistry. This continued in my doctoral work, where I TA'd three semesters of general chemistry lab and one of quantitative chemistry. I also spent two semesters as an assistant adjunct instructor of a general chemistry lab, where I worked with the head professor to design lab experiments, prepare lab TAs, give lectures, and design/grade assignments/tests.
Throughout my professional career, I have tutored students from introductory high school chemistry to upper-level university inorganic chemistry. Each student had different needs such as concept clarification, extra practice problems, time management skills, or test-taking strategies. By tailoring lessons to individual students, they were able to successfully meet their goals, and hopefully, have a little more fun in the process." less...
