"Hi I'm Jack, I am currently a freshman at the University of Florida. I took BC calculus (AP score of 5) and have also taken AP AB Calculus (AP score of 5), Aice Math, and algebra through algebra 2. I was an Officer in our school's math honor society (MHS) where we host a lunch time activity called math lab. Math lab is a place where students can come to get free tutoring during lunch from tutors just like myself. I have also done 3 SAT's where I excelled in the math section.
My tutoring experience involves almost 80 hours of volunteer tutoring at my high school. This involves upwards of 60 lunch time tutoring sessions where I assisted younger students with homework. Along with this is my involvement in setting up and running of 3 larger tutoring sessions that took place over multiple hours. This was for the purpose of reteaching students' concepts that they may have started to forget about. Along with this formal tutoring I am always ready and willing to assist classmates with work in the classes I am in.
When I tutor students, I want to assist them as little as needed. While most of the time it would be easiest for me to do it myself, I find that pointless. First I will let them get as far through a problem as they can to see where their problem areas are, then I may go through the next problem with them completely. Then as I go, I like to pull away little by little, letting them do the parts they understand and assisting with the problem areas. It's like teaching a child to ride a bike, you don't get on the bike with them and peddle it, you hold them, then you push them then you are just there in case they fall. This progressive style of teaching is what I find to be the most effective. By the end the goal is that they can do the problem by themselves and that they feel confident. Last but not least I make sure to keep a supportive tone throughout. There is nothing worse than feeling unintelligent while struggling with a topic and a tutor that is not supportive only makes that worse." less...
