"Hello! I'm Josh. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (go Badgers!), where I also studied education and completed a semester of student teaching. After college I continued my studies while working in business by completing the full series of actuarial exams to achieve the Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation, as well as the Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA). One of the key skills an Actuary needs to be successful, in addition to understanding the business of insurance and the associated mathematics, is how to explain these technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences, with the appropriate level of detail to help them achieve their goals.
I bring these skills to my approach to tutoring, where I enjoy explaining math topics to students from elementary math through calculus, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. I like to explain not just "what" to do but also the "why" so that students learn mathematical reasoning that will help them beyond their current work, and I often use different ways of explaining, from real world examples, theory, and neat shortcuts and tricks so that students can understand on their terms, to build their confidence. I truly believe all students can be successful in math if provided the right tools and assurance.
I have been teaching Personal Finance and Economics to high school students at a hybrid classical school since 2021, and I have been tutoring online in mathematics, economics, and finance since 2023. I love seeing students succeed as they understand new concepts and grow in their confidence. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a free consultation meeting." less...
