"Hi! My name is Nancy. I have spent over thirty years in education and have taught students ranging from the 6th grade through college. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in English. I am a retired teacher certified in secondary English and Spanish, K-12 Reading, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Exceptional Student Education, and Middle Grades.

Over my years of teaching, I have always tutored either in an official capacity or just to help a kid who was having problems understanding material, whether in my class or another. Working with students in small groups or one-on-one is gratifying because it provides students with the ability to ask questions without the fear of judgement. In that type of atmosphere, tension melts away and understanding is enhanced. I was always the kind of student who was afraid to ask questions because I thought the other students were smarter than I was. I don't want the students I work with to experience similar feelings. As a student, I needed detailed explanations to understand, and I needed someone who would stick with me when I was confused. This type of clear instruction is what I try to provide to my students. I use charts, pictures, and written texts to appeal to various learning styles. As soon as I feel students are hesitating or confused, I stop and try to clarify information by finding out at what step I lost them. When they don’t understand, I want them to ask questions. That way, understanding is ensured, and students can move forward with confidence.

The ability to touch the lives of young people has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love to see students learn and accomplish their goals.
