"I taught first, second and fourth graders in the Arlington Independent School District for forty-one years. Since retiring, I have been hired as a tutor for first and second graders in reading and math at my previous elementary schools by my former administrators.I have also done a limited amount of tutoring through a private foundation in Fort Worth.
I am the type of person who enjoys people. I have a track record of successfully working with parents. From my experience, I believe that it is essential for a child to master the fundamentals of learning in the first few grades in order to be successful in the years ahead. Once a child is behind in academic skills, it tends to lower self esteem and causes a variety of social issues. This needs to be addressed as early as possible.
In my tutoring, I use Systematic Sequential Phonics, Wilson System, and Words Their Way with beginning readers. I have leveled readers to accommodate students at their own ability level. I have testing materials to determine a student's developmental level and to set expectations. For children who need to develop comprehension skills, I focus on teaching a child through the analysis of reading passages. I also address weaknesses in written expression through a systematic approach for students learning to write fiction and non-fiction. I teach the basics of math by using a variety of manipulative materials, as well as, logic and reasoning through The Problem Solver Program which emphasizes strategies such as looking for patterns, making organized lists, making tables, working backwards and making things more simple. I to teach my students real world applications for math in order for them to realize its importance.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Louisiana State University and have had many hours of specialized trading through my school district.
I have a great deal of patience and love to work with children in order to build academic strength. I find that to be very rewarding." less...
