"I tutor most undergraduate computer science courses, from introductory programming to advanced algorithms, machine learning, operating systems, and theory of computation. Probably my most common subject is introductory algorithms (the second semester course at many universities), and I have become practiced at explaining what is often challenging material. I also sometimes work with masters' and high school students on a case-by-case basis, depending upon the student and subject.
I enjoy working with students of all abilities who are willing to engage and motivated to learn. While I can help you finish your homework or prepare for a midterm, I also want to help you acquire a deeper understanding that will serve you in future courses and beyond school. One-off lessons are fine, but in my experience regular meetings build a rapport that leads to better learning outcomes. Timely tutoring can mean the difference between "getting it" and "not getting it" in computer science, between following new material and falling farther behind.
After completing my undergraduate degree at Rice, I spent two years working in government and the software industry, then returned to school to earn a PhD in Bioinformatics. Along the way, I tutored and taught both undergraduate and graduate students in subjects including compilers, operating systems, algorithms, and programming languages. Since finishing my doctorate, my main focus has been on mountaineering, climbing peaks in North and South America, Europe, and most recently Central Asia." less...
