"At the end of April 2022, I graduated from the Turing School of Software and Design, with a Certificate in Front-End Engineering. In June I started my first job as a Software Engineer. I love the work, but I want to always have a medium where I am able to engage in my love of teaching.
My back story:
I graduated from UMass with degrees in English and Psychology. However, one of my main passions is working with and teaching people. At 19, I started working with Americorps, a domestic service program that provides volunteers for many different sectors of need in the country, including education. I started my education work with Jumpstart as a classroom assistant at a daycare, teaching kiddos from ages 2-5 phonetics, vocabulary, and basic writing skills.
After University, I worked with City Year, a program that works with schools on the verge of being taken over by the state. It sends volunteers to work with students as in-class tutors and mentors to help them focus on their academics and behavior. Working with my team, we raised the 8th grade math scores 10% for the year, which is a huge accomplishment. I wrote and implemented daily lesson plans tailored towards the learning needs of 16 youth who had IEPs and 504s, and took careful attention to each student's needs. I love to watch the light go off in a student's head when they start to understand an idea, and gain confidence in their skills.
I continued my work as a teaching assistant with Denver Academy, working with youth with differentiated learning needs. I gained experience in Orton-Gillingham, the fundamentals of English phonetics, and how to more rigorously check for reading comprehension. This really enhanced both my skills in teaching to a wide range of learning styles, and solidified how much I love this work.
I would love to help you gain confidence in learning subjects which feel tricky for you. I love to recognize and teach to different people's learning styles, and I am looking forward to helping you become empowered in yours." less...
