"Salve! Hello! My name is Michael. Ever since I started school, I have loved learning...but I have not always loved school. Your schedule gets crowded, your teacher moves on to the next unit, and the joy of learning gets smothered under the pressure of high expectations. I get it. I've been there. More importantly, I can help.
I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with degrees in Classics and Philosophy and have been working in middle- and high-school education ever since. While in college, I tutored writing and ancient Greek one-on-one, and in my time teaching at an independent school, I taught a year-long ancient Greek course and a semester-long course in research methods. I also substituted regularly for Latin and English courses. I have taught large classes but have extensive experience working individually with students. My background is primarily in middle- and high-school education, but I can help with college-level Greek and Latin up to the 200-level, as well as with introductory college writing courses.
I believe that tutors and teachers have to meet students where they are. In my experience teaching and learning, rapport is just as important as mastery of subject matter, if not more. I wouldn't want to learn from a person I didn't trust, and I wouldn't expect students to do any differently just because they're younger. If you're not listening, you're not helping. Patience is a must. There are all manner of reasons students don't succeed, but sometimes, all it takes is an extra hour of talking things through with someone who's willing to hear you out.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions about my experience, my credentials, or my tutoring philosophy. I am easy to get ahold of and will try my best to respond quickly. I hope I can help!" less...
