"Hi! My name is Danielle. I received my Ph. D from USF in Spring 2024. My degree was in English Literature with a concentration on 20th Century American Literature. My prior degrees were also in English (MA) and History (BA). I have taught college for over 8 years and also taught third grade for 2 years. I am currently teaching as an Assistant Professor in English. Courses taught range from Introduction to Literature, Freshman Composition I, Freshman Composition II, upper-level literature courses, and Introduction to Humanities.
I am adept at teaching reading skills, writing skills, and test taking strategies. I can work with students from an elementary age all the way through graduate school. I have tutored students who are neurotypical as well as neurodivergent and have assisted them in gaining new skills to help them be successful whatever their age and ability ranges are. Because of my educational background, I am incredibly patient and reassuring to students. I believe students learn best when they know their tutor is there to help them with a problem and to show them ways to solve it.
In tutoring sessions, I rely on a number of approaches. The first thing I do is establish a student's threshold and gaps of knowledge. What this means is that I get to know where the student is struggling and exact areas the student is lacking the knowledge to be successful. I then formulate a tutoring plan which is discussed with the student (and guardian if necessary). The student and I might revise the plan if they feel they are in need of additional or different strategies than those included. We then work weekly to accomplish one goal at a time. Students will complete metacognition tasks to help them identify where their weaknesses and strengths lie and work on strategies to overcome them. I've found students thrive on a goal-oriented approach where they know what part of the process we are in so they can engage more meaningfully." less...
