"My writing instruction experience spans disciplines, age groups, and genres. I’m passionate about helping learners access their agency within the writing process. We all face challenges when facing a blank page; learning the skills to accept the invitation of a blank page is key to sustainable (and survivable), successful writing.
I received my PhD from the University of St Andrews where I also provided one-on-one tutoring for undergraduates and postgraduates. As a fulltime faculty member in a graduate program, I also ran the Writing Center, hiring and training writing instructors as well as teaching writing workshops.
While I have been a classroom instructor for nearly a decade, I value the unique space of one-on-one tutoring. I aim to reduce anxiety and build confidence so that writing can be about writing, not about the things getting in the way of writing. So much occurs before the first word is typed; I help learners trust themselves as they establish reliable techniques for the writing ahead of them.
Here are some potential tutee profiles: high school or college students preparing summer internship applications; middle schoolers wanting to get a head start on how to approach longer form papers; high school or college students navigating essays and research papers; individuals who feel they are “bad” at writing; adults heading back to education after a long gap and are nervous about being students again; graduate students preparing to apply to doctoral programs or research grants; young people exploring their creative voice and desiring structure in that process.
Common topics: essay structure; citation methods; writing genres; interpreting assignments; time management; claims and thesis statements; editing your own work; note-taking and staying organized; reading towards writing; reviewing and learning from graded work; moving through procrastination; dealing with academic shame; achieving and maintaining focus while working on assignments; getting ideas from your brain and onto the page." less...
