"Hello! I am Dr. Ryan, a PhD Chemist with a minor in Philosophy from Edgefield, SC. I received my Undergraduate Degree from the University of South Carolina - Aiken and my Doctorate from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. I currently a consultant working with pharmaceutical companies to develop, manufacture, and control life changing medicines from concept to commercialization! As such, I use Chemistry on a day-to-day basis and love helping my clients!
As part of my graduate work, I was a Teaching Assistant for first-year Chemistry classes for 3 years. In this capacity, I was teaching students of all ages introductory Chemistry in recitation classes, which is my preferred style of teaching/tutoring. In this style, I provide examples of the types of situations and/or questions to be expected during exams to guide instruction and identify areas of further focus. I prefer this style as it allows for a practical approach to instruction and provide real-life examples experienced in the lab and beyond. I have utilized this method in teaching homeschooled High School students and have had great success within our homeschool co-op.
In addition to teaching traditional College and High School students, I have taught at Aiken Technical College as an Adjunct Instructor to non-traditional students as part of an apprenticeship with the nearby Savannah River Site. This instruction included basic nuclear chemistry and chemical engineering. The wide variety of my teaching experience has well equipped me to identify areas of improvement for students and addressing these concerns. I believe in meeting the student where they are in their knowledge and filling the gaps by providing an alternative view that may benefit them.
Chemistry is hard! Not everybody is hardwired for it. I am passionate about finding a student's communication style and trying to meet them there so that they can see the beauty in the subject." less...
