"I used to HATE math, and I dreaded going to math class all the way through high school. Finally, something clicked in college with a calculus professor, and I realized that math did not have to be painful. I started tutoring math in college, and the people I worked with started saying, "I didn't realize math could be this easy!" and some even asked if I had ever thought about becoming a math teacher. My parents were both teachers (one taught math), but I had never considered that as a profession...until now.
I actually earned my degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, but after working as a civil engineer for a few years, I decided to pursue my vocation of teaching. I switched careers to become a high school math and physics teacher and have loved the profession ever since!
I have taught everything from 7th grade math to Precalculus/Trigonometry and even went back to graduate school three times to learn as much as I could about how to be an effective teacher. The first time was to earn a Masters in the Arts of Teaching (completed in 2010), the second time was to earn an administrator's license so I could help support new teachers (completed in 2013), and the third time was to earn my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction (completed in 2020).
I now work at the university level preparing undergraduate and graduate students to become teachers, and my specialty is working with future math teachers. (My high school teachers LOVE to know that the student who once hated math is now teaching math at the university level!) The 2023-2024 school year is my 19th year as a teacher, and my approach to tutoring is simple: I want you to be in a position to explain the "why" of the math, not just to get the right answer. Once you learn the "why", you will excel in your math classes.
If you are looking for an experienced tutor with an extensive knowledge of how people learn math, reach out to me to schedule a session. I respond immediately to messages and look forward to working with you!" less...
