"Hi! My name is Ben, and I'm a mathematician who loves helping others learn and improve in math! I have earned a Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD all in math. When I was a graduate student, I received an award as an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant. My approach to learning and teaching math is a combination of focused practice on the types of problems you need to be able to solve, as well as building a deep understanding of why things work the way they do. In tutoring, I often focus on high-level questions to guide productive studying. What makes the problem special? Can we use techniques we know from other problems? If not, why is it different? My aim in this to is to help students learn to approach new problems in a productive and curious way, which I've found helps both on the practical level of homework and in-class problems, and also long-term success in future math classes.
I have enjoyed many opportunities to teach and tutor at a variety of different skill levels. That includes a year of tutoring developmental math courses as early as pre-algebra. I also have 6 years of experience teaching at the college level, with classes including college algebra/trigonometry, calculus, linear algebra, discrete math, and combinatorics. I have gotten to work with many students one-on-one outside of class, providing extra help when they got stuck or needed additional support.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out! I love working with students, and I would be happy to hear from you." less...
