"I’m a PhD student in classics at Columbia University, and I have master’s degrees in classics (Columbia) and comparative literature (Penn State University). I have three years of experience teaching undergraduates, two as a full instructor and one as a TA. I also have extensive experience teaching outside the academy, as a board game and tabletop roleplaying game instructor for elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and adults. As a rule, I try to be both gentle and enthusiastic with my students, and to encourage creativity and experimentation wherever I can. I aim for my love of my subjects to diminish stress and, hopefully, increase enjoyment and therefore knowledge and skill. I am eager to work with any students in Greek, Latin, and English language and literature who wish to gain familiarity and comfort with grammar, translation, writing, or literary analysis!

I combine a focus on the nuts and bolts of language with excitement about the literature itself. I enhance textbook material with my own materials and explanations, and I make sure to consistently return to troubling topics across multiple sessions.

During COVID, I've often made use of whiteboards to take apart tricky sentences. I draw color-coded diagrams to take apart the puzzle pieces of syntax, rearranging components and drawing brackets and arrows to try to show the logic of what's going on. It's low-tech, but it's effective-- and a lot of fun.

Homer is my particular specialty; I adore the language, the characters, the depth of emotion, and the moments of the fantastic. Other favorites include Greek drama, Lucian, Herodotus, and Demosthenes. I'm comfortable with any level and any genre of ancient Greek, from elementary to graduate. I'm also happy to tutor elementary and intermediate Latin; Vergil and Ovid are my favorites there, along with Statius and (sometimes) Cicero.

I'm trained in comparative literature and literary analysis; my undergraduate degree (UChicago) and my first master's degree (Penn State) are both in comparative literature." less...
