"Hi there, I'm Annie! I graduated cum laude from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Conservation Biology. I am now a PhD student at Rice University studying tropical rainforest conservation using fieldwork and machine learning. Throughout my academic career, I have always been passionate about making knowledge, especially science, accessible to all. I believe everyone has the right to education, and there is nothing wrong with needing some assistance in learning or being confused about a topic. Learning is a never-ending goal and journey, and a fantastic journey at that. As someone with a background in Biology but whose current research uses computer engineering concepts, I know first-hand the frustration that a new topic can create. I want to help students who have the passion and curiosity to seek out the new.

I am a TA at Rice for the programming language R, with a group of 15 graduate students, and I worked in child care for six years, which included helping elementary-aged children with learning in both 1-1 situations and groups up to 25. I have personal and professional experience with students with ADHD and autism as well. I also have experience volunteering with non-profits working with botanic gardens, wetlands, and other natural sites, and have engaged in educational programming for both children and adults with these organizations. I believe in a learning style that encourages and gives confidence to students by providing guidance for students to ultimately solve the problem/concept on their own terms.
