"During and after college, I was a counselor, tutor, and teacher for troubled and troublesome boys. I had to learn how to make the subject matter interesting to my students—or else . . . ! Later I worked for a publisher, wrote books that were promoted by commercial publishers, coached cross country, and did a fair amount of family counseling. In my fifties and sixties I was the curator of an extensive collection of antique fine art, which is now the teaching collection at a liberal arts college. I have written a number of sonnets, some of which have been published in magazines, and an epic poem in Spenserian stanza. I have a broad perspective; I know how to connect diverse things in interesting ways; and I like to see students get excited about learning.

I graduated from Harvard cum laude in general studies, with a B. A. in English. In addition to the experiences listed above, my wife and I raised five children and homeschooled two of them, so we had plenty of tutoring time at home. (Our children all graduated from college with honors, three of them with highest honors, summa cum laude.) I particularly enjoy helping students turn a formidable writing assignment into an interesting adventure.
