"Hi! My name is Paula. I have experience with students ranging from age 3 through adulthood. I understand that the methods for teaching a 3 year old are much different than teaching a 15 year old with some musical background. Therefore, my teaching methods will reflect their differences.
Nancy and Randall Faber have created an excellent curriculum called, Piano Adventures. This is the primary curriculum that I use for piano. Students who take lessons with me will not only be able to read music notes and play them, they will also learn improvisation, sight reading, how to transpose (without writing it down!), and gain a greater understanding of music theory in general.
I have been involved in music my entire life, starting with piano lessons at age 6 and continuing through high school. In high school I added private clarinet lessons as well as voice lessons to my schedule. I minored in music at Roberts Wesleyan College, taking courses including piano pedagogy, many theory and private clarinet lessons as well as participating in the college wind ensemble. I also have experience as a worship leader (lead worship at my church for 4 years) and in bell choir. I played in my church's bell choir from middle school through college and eventually directed that group for 3 years. In addition to my church group, I auditioned for a community handbell choir in Virginia Beach and played for a year with that group. I currently sing on the worship team and play in the advanced handbell choir at my church.
One of my passions is to assist people in developing and refining their skills. I truly enjoy working with people to help them grow an learn. I look forward to hopefully meeting, and working with you!" less...
