"Hello, I'm Matt! I've been a professional tutor for over 25 years, logging more than 30,000 hours of private one-on-one tutoring. I began my tutoring career at the University of Maine in the campus tutoring center. Shortly thereafter, as my schedule filled up with tutoring students, and the demand greatly outweighed the supply, I recognized I had a gift for teaching math. Being an average math student in high school, and not realizing my true potential until a teacher took time out of his schedule to work with me one-on-one, I knew what these "lost" students who came to me needed, and I understood where they were coming from. My students appreciated my fresh take on math, and almost all of the students I've worked with since then say I teach math like a "normal person" and not a "math person." I graduated with a degree in Mathematics from the University of Maine in 2001, and immediately started a career in Finance, while continuing to tutor on the side. In 2010, my tutoring base was so large, I was able to leave the finance world, and began tutoring full-time.
I take an easy-going, humorous, and laid back approach to my tutoring sessions. I find out what the students strengths and weaknesses are, discuss what the student would like to work on, and focus any of their perceived strengths and relate it to the current subject/topic they're learning and/or struggling with. I can relate to struggling in a math course, so students feel at ease sharing their struggles with me. With my decades of experience, I've seen a wide array of learning styles and can quickly and easily adapt to each individual student I'm working with, most times, after seeing them complete or work through one or two problems.
If there was a silver lining to the pandemic, it proved that online tutoring is as effective as face-to-face tutoring. The ease of jumping on your laptop for a session, regardless of your location, with a tutor who you've built trust and a rapport with, is priceless. Please contact me with any questions!" less...
