"Hello! My name is Garrett and I want to help you make beautiful music! I graduated with honors from both Citrus College as well as California State University Northridge and have been focusing on performing and writing music alongside teaching private lessons for almost a decade. Coming up through college I loved performing and have been fortunate to play with some great acts throughout the years (Mild High Club, NIKI, Barbara Morrison, Melissa Manchester, Tantamount Orchestra), helping to add my own personal flavor to various artists projects both in a live setting and in the recording studio. surprised to find that while I wouldn't want to teach a full class of students, I really enjoyed by one-on-one private lessons.
The biggest surprise that was in store for me in college for the love that I found in teaching my private students. I had never held a desire to teach at any point before, however once I began teaching a friend the basics of saxophone as a birthday gift I found it to be extremely rewarding to see another person discover their love of playing music in part because of me. Perhaps it's a bit egocentric, but I feel immense pride in saying that I have been able to help steer multiple students into various honor bands over the years.
With 3 degrees in various music fields, I have been put through the academic ringer and have come out with a wide array of exercises and concepts that can help get a student from beginner to professional in a timely manner.
I like my students to focus on building foundational skills and concepts using a mixture of classical exercises and contemporary songs so that we can have a solid base to build on and to keep bad habits to a minimum (hopefully 0) and still keep my students engaged!
I want to help get as many people as I can into the various instruments I teach (sax, flute, clarinet, and piano) as I find that some of the nicest, intelligent, most well-rounded people I've met have come from the musician world that I'm privy to." less...
