I have always helped classmates for free in various courses I have been in, such as econ, discrete math, linear algebra, C++, etc. Rarely I accept payment for this. My general approach is to first ask what they're stuck on and what they've tried so far. This gives me the context to help guide them along the path to the solution, whether it is a programming task or a math problem. I vary how hand-hold-y I am based on this as well, because it can be frustrating to be too hands-off but it can also be not as helpful to just do it for someone if they are mostly capable of it already.
I put that I have taught for 2-4 years primarily because my earliest memories of tutoring my classmates are from when I was a freshman in high school but it would be misleading to count that as 5+ years of experience because it was very on and off. I would say that a majority of my experience by now has been with my college peers in my 2 years at IVC. In general, I hang out with people outside of class and they ask me questions because they know I am "that guy" who can answer them." less...
