"My background is 25+ years of Design Engineering Management. Three of those years were spent as an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly), Pomona. I found those three years to be the most enjoyable of my entire professional work experience.
I took an early retirement four+ years ago and soon found myself volunteering at the Veterans Administration Healthcare System, La Jolla. During this time, I did math tutoring for a math distressed college student, 9th, 10th and 11th graders, and a CBEST graduate student. Last year I tutored an 11 year old 6th grader who was struggling mightily with math, and he, his parents, and I thoroughly enjoyed his progress. Today, math is his favorite subject.
So many times I’ve heard the expression, “I’m not good at math,” or “Math is not for me”. I find ways to make learning mathematics interesting, and I daresay fun for all age groups, plus I was challenged to find ways to mitigate those negative perspectives. Those tutoring sessions and the results I saw made me aware again that I have a real talent for teaching mathematics. I am currently an Adjunct Professor at Saint Katherine College, San Marcos, and completely enjoyed teaching three math courses, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, and Calculus I this last fall semester with first-rate results. I am scheduled to return to Saint Katherine in the fall, 2017.
I thoroughly enjoy the expression on a student's face when they "get it" knowing another math connection was made. Pure joy can be yours to experience during exam time when you simply cannot write down the correct answers fast enough because you know the material." less...
