"I am a published author in both small, academic journals and large circulation magazines (Fly Fisherman, American Baby, Adirondack Life...)--with a book of creative nonfiction essays very likely to be published within the year. With over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience at the university level (Yale, Quinnipiac University, Kalamazoo College...) and 10 years as a full time English teacher at a small college preparatory high school, I have helped students at all levels with their writing and understanding of literature. Service on college admissions committees and working with innumerable students as a high school teacher on college entrance essays have given me a unique perspective on understanding what really helps students write dynamic, effective college application essays. As a practicing writer with a bi-weekly Substack, "Journey Casts," and the academic work I put into my podcast, "Hemingway, Word for Word," I can offer student writers/readers vital, authentic advice and feedback.
Having worked with so many diverse learners, from first-generation college students at the University of Maine to highly advanced writers in the course William Zinsser made famous at Yale, "Reading and Writing the Modern Essay," I am adept at working with students to help them find their way forward. My extensive experience helps me meet students where they are in their understanding and then to steadily gain confidence and improve their skills. Finding what is working and building from there is essential in helping students find their own voice and harness the potential of the written word.
Having an M.F.A. in fiction writing, and having published many short stories, poems, and creative nonfiction, I feel especially comfortable helping writers with their creative endeavors, but given my extensive teaching background and publishing history, I am also at home helping students on their critical analysis essays as well." less...
