"To Students and Parents:
I'm looking forward to working with students who are high school age or older and who need some assistance (and some encouragement!) in order to understand one of Shakespeare's sonnets, to complete a school writing assignment, to organize their research for a term paper, to submit a winning college application essay, or even to present their "best self" on a job application.
I particularly enjoy working with adults to help them refine and polish their writing skills, such as when they're preparing for a presentation at work, reading a novel or a biography with deeper understanding and comprehension, or promoting a local organization or non-profit.
To students and adults, I bring years of experience as a high school English teacher, a published writer, and a magazine publisher and editor. My tutoring approach is straightforward, practical, and pragmatic: Good writing isn't a mystery or a gift from the gods that others were given but they themselves were denied. It's the result of having a plan, considering their audience, and finding their 'voice,' and I have a wide variety of strategies that will help assure that the students and adults I work with make progress quickly.
My home is my office, and I'm available almost every day and in the evening and on weekends. I'll meet students wherever it is convenient -- in their home, at a town/college library, at a place of business, or at the local coffee shop or bistro. Together, we'll get your paper written, your speech prepared, your thesis organized, your school essay polished, and your presentation rehearsed. Please check the nice things that former students have said about me. I look forward to working with you." less...
