"I attended Austin Community College where I majored in Radio Television and Film. History, Cultural Anthropology, Film Production, and Screenwriting were my favorite subjects. I love learning as well as engaging others in learning.
I have a limited experience in tutoring professionally. I do have a love of lifelong learning. I hope to pass that on to those I am tutoring. I believe that learning is a lifelong process.
I struggled with math during my early elementary years. In Third grade, math began to make sense. Though, math was challenging; I began to grow a fondness for it. I was given a mastery-based approach to mathematics. In the 6th grade, this changed. The method used was strange to me. It didn't fit my learning style at all. I don't think spiraling doesn't work. It just didn't work for me. A mastery approach might not work for someone else.
I struggled through middle school, high school, and college mathematics. College mathematics revealed what I was lacking. I'd learned how to do a problem. I hadn't learned the why. I wasn't taught to think mathematically.
The strange thing is I grew a renewed fondness for mathematics after finishing school. Teaching my younger cousins with an old 1800's primer gave me so many aha moments it was ridiculous. I then purchased all of the 1935 Practical Arithmetic Books by Strayer-Upton. Word problems no longer difficult. Math is everywhere. Math is related to the real world. I made connections through teaching others. K-6th math is important for teaching a conceptual understanding. The student can go on to higher level mathematics with a better understanding of the why. They can master the how in the process.
That's the beauty of tutoring. I can find a style that works for my pupils. I can also set a foundation for mathematical understanding.
I love to read. My mother, as well as a woman who watched me during the day, set the foundation. Both taught me an appreciation for reading. I believe a life-long love of reading should be encouraged.
I loved science in Elementary. I loved reading about science. I also loved doing experiments. I love hands-on learning. I love project based learning. It's fun to take what you've read and apply it to the real world.
History is another favorite. I love history. History is fun. History is more than dates. It's about people. The history of how the U. S. Government formed etc. That was my favorite part of my U. S. Government class.
