"Hi!! I am Rayana. I am a 12th grader with a special background in Algebra, Geometry, Probability, Arithmetics, Elementary, Middle, & all NC math’s (1-4). I have had a passion for math since the third grade. My teacher made it very fun & easily comprehensive.
Ever since, I’ve enrolled myself into ‘Math Counts’ & math competitions for two years. Volunteered in Elementary schools around New Hanover County ,regarding education. Along with being an AIG (Academically or Intelligently Gifted) student for five years. A participant in North Carolina School of Science and Math ‘Step Up to STEM’ summer program for two years & their ‘District C’ program for one. I am currently an Honors student & have had lots of experiences regarding NC MATH. These opportunities have given me lots of knowledge upon learning mathematics & the different ways to connect it to our daily lives.
I have been tutoring weekly for the past 3 years. All different ages, from the third grade to the eleventh. When tutoring, I normally connect class material to a student’s favorite topics. The topic can include hobbies, likes, interests, etc. I gain this information in our meet & greet to help shape our lessons. Once I introduce the topic & use a practice problem as an example. I then walk step by step with the student, letting them lead, & asking questions along the way. Once I feel they have the hang of it, I will let them have 10-15 mins of independent work, out of an hour. Followed by one more problem together.
I love to build confidence & assurance within the classroom/sessions because I remember what it felt like to be afraid to ask a question, especially in front of an entire class. As long as we can communicate our worries & concerns, it’s a lot easier to move through the problem & solve it. Always feel free to ask questions or try a different technique because there’s ALWAYS more than one way. Therefore, never give up!!!" less...
